🌬️🪁 Ride the Wind Day – August 23 🪁🌬️
You can't see the wind.
But you can see exactly where it's been.
Curtains lift.
Leaves dance.
Flags snap.
Clouds wander.
A kite suddenly remembers what it was built for.
And somebody wearing a wide-brimmed hat makes an immediate tactical error.
Ride the Wind Day, celebrated August 23, is about the glorious human obsession with catching something we can't see and letting it carry us somewhere.
Gliders.
Kites.
Sailboats.
Paragliders.
Windsurfers.
Paper airplanes.
Even that plastic grocery bag currently traveling across the parking lot with more ambition than most of us had this morning.
Today is for looking up, getting outside, and appreciating the invisible force that's been moving things around since long before humans decided to join the fun.

🪁 Humans Have Always Wanted to Catch It
Wind is one of those things humans looked at and immediately thought:
“How can we use that?”
For thousands of years, sailors harnessed wind to cross rivers, seas, and oceans.
Windmills turned moving air into useful mechanical power.
Kites took flight centuries ago.
Eventually, humans began experimenting with gliders.
And once we discovered we could use moving air to stay aloft?
Things escalated.
Naturally.
Ride the Wind Day is often connected with the anniversary of the Kremer Prize-winning flight of the Gossamer Condor, a human-powered aircraft designed by Dr. Paul MacCready and his team.
On August 23, 1977, pilot and cyclist Bryan Allen flew the delicate aircraft around a figure-eight course in California, completing a challenge many had thought nearly impossible.
The aircraft looked less like a conventional airplane and more like something built from optimism, plastic wrap, and very careful instructions.
It worked.
🚲 Wait. A Bicycle-Powered Airplane?
Pretty much.
The Gossamer Condor was powered by the pilot pedaling.
Bryan Allen wasn't sitting comfortably while an engine did the work.
He was essentially cycling,
in the sky.
The aircraft had an enormous wingspan but was extraordinarily lightweight.
Human-powered flight had been attempted before, but the Kremer Prize required an aircraft to complete a demanding figure-eight course around two markers half a mile apart, clear specified obstacles, and do it entirely under human power.
Allen succeeded.
It was slow.
It was fragile.
It was brilliant.
And it proved something engineers love proving:
“Impossible” occasionally means “nobody has solved it yet.”
🌬️ Wind Is Basically Invisible Energy
We feel wind because air is moving.
But why does air move?
Uneven heating.
The sun warms Earth's surface differently depending on location, landscape, time of day, and countless other factors.
Warm air rises.
Pressure differences develop.
Air moves from areas of higher pressure toward lower pressure.
And suddenly your picnic napkins are in another county.
On a global scale, wind helps shape weather and climate.
On a practical scale, humans have used it for transportation, food production, recreation, and energy.
On a personal scale, it destroys umbrellas.
Wind contains multitudes.
🪁 Kites Figured This Out Long Before Airplanes
Kites have been flown for more than 2,000 years, with early versions commonly associated with ancient China.
They weren't always toys.
Kites have been used for military signaling, scientific experiments, measuring distances, lifting instruments, studying weather, and testing ideas related to flight.
And yes, Benjamin Franklin famously used a kite during his experiments involving electricity.
Please do not recreate that today.
We know you're enthusiastic.
The weather service would prefer everyone remain unelectrified.

🌬️ Wind is simply air moving relative to Earth's surface.
🪁 Kites need the right combination of lift, drag, tension, and gravity to stay in the air.
⛵ Sailing vessels can travel in directions other than directly downwind by using the interaction between sails, wind, and water.
⚡ Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of moving air into electrical energy.
🦅 Birds use rising currents of air to soar while conserving energy.
✈️ Pilots pay close attention to wind direction and speed because both affect takeoffs, landings, and flight.
👒 And wind has absolutely no respect for hairstyles.
None.
🌳 Go Find Some Moving Air
Fly a kite.
Take a sailboat ride.
Try windsurfing.
Watch paragliders or hang gliders.
Visit a hilltop.
Make pinwheels with the kids.
Blow bubbles outside and watch where they travel.
Build paper airplanes.
Hang wind chimes.
Make a windsock.
Photograph trees moving in the breeze.
Lie in the grass and watch clouds travel overhead.
Learn how wind turbines work.
Take a bike ride and enjoy the tailwind.
Sit outside in the evening without doing anything productive whatsoever.
Feel the breeze.
Sometimes celebrating a holiday doesn't require a craft supply run.
🫧 Follow the Wind
Here's an easy family activity.
Grab a bottle of bubbles.
Go outside.
Blow bubbles in several different places.
Which direction do they travel?
Do they move faster near buildings?
What happens near trees?
Can you predict where they'll go?
Children will think they're chasing bubbles.
You're actually sneaking in a weather lesson.
Educational espionage strikes again.
🍽️ Dinner Is Up in the Air
Tonight's food is light, summery, and designed for eating outside while the napkins repeatedly attempt escape.
🍋 Airy Lemon Chicken
Ingredients
4 chicken breasts
2 tablespoons olive oil
Juice and zest of one lemon
2 cloves garlic
1 teaspoon oregano
Salt and pepper
Directions
Combine olive oil, lemon, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper.
Pour over the chicken.
Marinate for 30 minutes if time allows.
Grill until cooked through.
Finish with lemon zest.
Serve outside.
Place something heavy on the napkins.

🌽 Windblown Corn Salad
Combine:
Fresh corn
Cherry tomatoes
Avocado
Red onion
Cilantro
Lime juice
Olive oil
Salt
Toss everything together and serve chilled.
If the wind actually blows it away, the name becomes less charming.
🥖 Parmesan Puff Twists
Use refrigerated puff pastry.
Cut into strips, twist, brush with egg, and sprinkle with Parmesan and Italian seasoning.
Bake at 400°F until puffed and golden.
Crispy little edible wind spirals.
These will disappear quickly without meteorological assistance.
🍋 Tailwind Fizz – Mocktail
Ingredients
Lemonade
Cucumber slices
Mint
Sparkling water
Ice
Muddle cucumber and mint lightly.
Add lemonade and ice.
Top with sparkling water.
Refreshing enough for a windy August afternoon.
🍹 Trade Winds – Cocktail
Ingredients
1½ ounces light rum
1 ounce pineapple juice
¾ ounce lime juice
½ ounce coconut cream
Ice
Shake thoroughly with ice.
Strain into a chilled glass.
Garnish with lime.
Close your eyes and pretend the patio is somewhere tropical.
Do not close them long enough for your drink to blow over.
☁️ Sky-High Lemon Mousse
Ingredients
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup lemon curd
2 cups whipped topping
Lemon zest
Crushed graham crackers
Directions
Beat cream cheese until smooth.
Mix in lemon curd.
Gently fold in whipped topping.
Spoon into glasses.
Chill.
Top with lemon zest and graham cracker crumbs.
Fluffy enough to fit the theme.
Heavy enough not to become airborne.
Ideal.
🍎 Let the Wind Teach the Lesson
Elementary
Make simple windsocks from paper, ribbon, and string.
Take them outside and observe:
Which way is the wind blowing?
Is the wind always equally strong?
Does it change direction?
Students can also build pinwheels and experiment with how moving faster changes their rotation.
Then ask the dangerous question:
“Can you make your pinwheel spin without touching it?”
Twenty children begin blowing simultaneously.
Teachers, I apologize.
Secondary
Challenge students to design a lightweight glider.
Provide paper, cardstock, straws, tape, and limited materials.
The goal isn't simply distance.
The glider must stay airborne as long as possible.
Students should modify one variable at a time—wing size, weight distribution, shape, or angle—and record the results.
Then introduce the Gossamer Condor.
Engineering becomes much more interesting when someone has already built an enormous airplane powered by bicycle pedals.

Hold a Paper Airplane Hang-Time Challenge.
Not distance.
Hang time.
Everyone gets one sheet of paper and ten minutes.

🌬️ Not Everything Needs to Be Controlled
We spend a lot of life trying to control things.
Schedules.
Plans.
Temperatures.
Routes.
Outcomes.
Calendars.
Children.
Hair.
The wind finds this amusing.
It changes direction.
Pushes clouds around.
Turns umbrellas inside out.
Carries seeds somewhere unexpected.
Fills sails.
Lifts wings.
And reminds us that sometimes movement doesn't come from pushing harder.
Sometimes it comes from catching what's already moving.
That's what sailors learned.
What birds already knew.
What glider pilots understand.
You don't control the wind.
You adjust.
You work with it.
You let it carry you for a while.
Maybe that's not a bad idea for August 23.
Go outside.
Look up.
Feel which way the air is moving.
