There was a very specific period of childhood when five teenagers wearing different colors could appear on television and you immediately understood:
These people are qualified to save the world.
No background checks necessary.
Red?
Leader.
Blue?
Smart.
Pink?
Probably going to perform a gymnastics move that absolutely wasn't required but looked fantastic.
Yellow?
Do not underestimate.
Black?
Cooler than everyone else.
Then somebody yelled:
“IT'S MORPHIN TIME!”
And an entire generation abandoned the couch.
Power Rangers Day, celebrated August 28, is a full-volume tribute to the colorful heroes, giant robots, rubber-suited monsters, impossible explosions, and wonderfully sincere lesson that saving the world works better when everybody brings something different to the team.
For those of us who remember the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, today is also an opportunity to confront an uncomfortable truth:
The children who watched Power Rangers in 1993 are now adults who get excited about good lumbar support.
Time is the ultimate villain.

📺 August 28, 1993: Saturday Mornings Got Much Louder
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers premiered in the United States on August 28, 1993.
And children's television was never quite the same.
The premise was magnificent.
A group of teenagers in Angel Grove was recruited by the wise Zordon to protect Earth from Rita Repulsa and her parade of increasingly strange monsters.
The Rangers received powers.
Color-coded suits.
Weapons.
Dinosaur-inspired Zords.
And the ability to survive an astonishing number of explosions occurring approximately three feet behind them.
There was karate.
There were monsters.
There were giant robots.
There was a floating head in a tube.
Nobody questioned any of this.
We were children.
It made perfect sense.
🇯🇵 But the Power Rangers Story Didn't Actually Begin in Angel Grove
One of the coolest things about Power Rangers is how the original American series was created.
Power Rangers adapted action footage and concepts from Japan's long-running Super Sentai franchise.
Scenes featuring costumed Rangers, monsters, and giant robots could be combined with newly filmed American scenes featuring the cast audiences came to know as Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, Billy, and later Tommy.
The result was something unusual.
Part American teen show.
Part Japanese superhero action.
Part martial arts.
Part science fiction.
Part enormous robot punching a monster through an office building.
Television executives apparently looked at this combination and said:
“Children will understand.”
They did.
Immediately.
🟢 And Then Tommy Showed Up
We need to talk about the Green Ranger.
Tommy Oliver entered the series as an enemy controlled by Rita Repulsa.
He had the Dragon Shield.
The Dragon Dagger.
The Dragonzord.
And hair that deserved its own opening credit.
Then Tommy broke free of Rita's control and joined the Rangers.
Playgrounds were never the same.
Everyone suddenly wanted to be the Green Ranger.
Red Ranger loyalties collapsed.
Friendships were renegotiated.
Children who had spent months happily being Blue announced:
“Actually, I'm Tommy now.”
Later, Tommy became the White Ranger and continued appearing across multiple eras of the franchise.
The late Jason David Frank, who played Tommy, became one of the most recognizable and beloved performers associated with Power Rangers.
For many fans, Tommy wasn't merely another Ranger.
He was the Ranger.
🤖 Let's Discuss the Megazord Logic
Monster appears.
Rangers fight monster.
Rangers defeat monster.
Rita makes monster enormous.
At this point, any reasonable city planner would resign.
The Rangers summon their Zords.
The Zords combine.
MEGAZORD.
And suddenly we're watching a skyscraper-sized robot fight a skyscraper-sized monster in an area that definitely contained insured property five minutes ago.
Who repairs Angel Grove?
Is there a special municipal Megazord Damage Department?
Are homeowners covered for:
“Giant monster fell through garage”?
What are the premiums?
These are the questions adulthood brings.
As children, we had one concern:

We're building one giant pizza from separate sections.
Obviously.
Ingredients
1 large pizza crust
½ cup pizza sauce
2 cups mozzarella
Pepperoni
Red bell pepper
Yellow bell pepper
Black olives
Mushrooms
Green peppers
Any other favorite toppings
Directions
Heat the oven according to your pizza crust instructions.
Spread sauce over the crust.
Add mozzarella.
Divide the pizza visually into Ranger-colored topping sections.
Bake until golden and bubbly.

Absolutely.

❤️ The Rangers Were Never Powerful Because They Matched
Look past the giant robots for a minute.
Power Rangers had a pretty good message hiding beneath all those explosions.
The Rangers weren't identical.
They had different personalities.
Different abilities.
Different weaknesses.
Different ways of solving problems.
Sometimes they disagreed.
Sometimes one struggled.
Sometimes someone needed help.
But the biggest battles were rarely won by one Ranger standing alone.
Eventually came the moment everyone waited for.
The Zords arrived separately.
Then:
They connected.
That's the whole idea.
Nobody had to become less themselves for the team to become stronger.
They became stronger because the different pieces worked together.
That's not a terrible lesson to carry out of a children's show involving a giant talking head and dinosaur robots.
You don't need to be the Red Ranger.
Maybe you're Blue.
Maybe you're Pink.
Maybe you're the slightly chaotic Green Ranger who arrives halfway through the story carrying emotional baggage and a flute dagger.
Fine.
Bring what you've got.
Find people whose strengths aren't identical to yours.
Build something bigger together.
And when life produces the occasional giant monster?
