🧑‍💻 Origin Story: Who Plugged This In? 🔌

Techies Day was launched in 1999 by Techies.com (RIP to that very dot-com-era name) in partnership with CNET Networks. It was created as a way to encourage young people to consider careers in technology and to recognize the tech professionals already making digital magic behind the scenes. Back then, the internet was still basically dial-up and Ask Jeeves was a thing—so we’ve come a long way, baby.

🤓 Fun (and Slightly Nerdy) Techie Tidbits

  • The average developer drinks 4+ cups of coffee a day. If you’ve ever written code, this is not surprising. ☕🧠

  • “Techie” isn’t just about coding—IT pros, network admins, UX designers, cybersecurity experts, and even spreadsheet sorcerers are all part of the tribe. 💾📊

  • The first computer programmer was Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century mathematician who basically wrote the first algorithm… in a corset. Respect. 🧑‍🎤💻

  • Most techies have strong opinions about tabs vs. spaces. (Pro tip: Don’t bring it up unless you’re ready for a TED Talk.) 😬

🎉 10+ Delightfully Nerdy Ways to Celebrate Techies Day

  1. Send your favorite techie a meme of appreciation. Bonus points if it’s hilariously specific (and slightly unhinged).

  2. Learn a bit of codeeven 10 minutes on Scratch or Python can make you feel like a wizard. 🪄

  3. Watch a classic techie flick like Hackers, The Social Network, or WarGames. Or go full throwback with Revenge of the Nerds. 🍿

👾 ELEMENTARY ACTIVITY: “Robot Rescue: A STEM Story Mission”

🧠 Integrated Literacy + Engineering Design Challenge
📚 Grades: 2–5 (easily adaptable K–1 with more guided support)

🧰 Materials:

  • Printable “Robot Rescue” story cards

  • Blank paper or design templates

  • Recyclable classroom materials (pipe cleaners, cardboard, string, tape, paper towel tubes, LEGOs, foil, etc.)

  • Crayons/markers

  • Timer (optional)

📖 The Setup:

Students are junior inventors helping a robot friend (RoboQuirk 🤖✨) who has lost power and needs repairs. But RoboQuirk can only be fixed using creativity, teamwork, and engineering smarts! Each group will get a mission card with a mini-story and a challenge to design a solution.

🧩 Steps:

  1. Hook (5–10 min):
    Begin with:
“Did you know today is Techies Day? That means we’re celebrating the people who build, fix, and dream up all the cool tech we use every day! From video games to robots to computers, techies make it all possible.”
    Then introduce RoboQuirk:
“But oh no—our classroom robot has broken down! RoboQuirk needs help and only YOU can save the day!”

  2. Story Mission Cards (10 min):
Break students into small groups and hand out one mission card to each group.

  3. Design Challenge (20–30 min):
Using classroom materials, students create their solution (a robot arm, power pack, coding map, etc.—depending on the card). Encourage collaboration and creativity!

  4. Share & Reflect (10 min):
Each group presents their design, explaining how it works and how it helps RoboQuirk.
Wrap up by linking this to real-world techie jobs like engineers, programmers, and inventors.

💡 Bonus Techie Twist:

If you have access to iPads or Chromebooks, let students “document” their invention in Flip or Seesaw with a short video pitch explaining how it works! 🎥📱

🧠 SECONDARY ACTIVITY: “Future Tech Job Fair: You’re the Innovator!”

🎯 Career Exploration + Creative Tech Design
📚 Grades: 6–12

🧰 Materials:

  • “Future Tech Job Fair” worksheet

  • Poster paper or slide software (Google Slides, Canva, etc.)

  • Markers, pens, access to research devices (if possible)

🎤 The Setup:

Students will explore emerging tech jobs—some real, some totally imagined—and create a pitch for a future tech career of their own invention. Think “Drone Park Ranger” or “Virtual Reality Therapist.” This mashup of career exploration + creative thinking = a quirky career fair like no other!

🧩 Steps:

  1. Intro Discussion (5–10 min):
    Start with:
“Today’s Techies Day—a time to celebrate the creators of code, gadgets, apps, and everything digital. But what about the tech jobs that don’t exist yet? That’s where YOU come in!”

  2. Inspiration Spark (5–10 min):
Share a few wild real-world examples:

    • AI Ethicist 🤖⚖️

    • Digital Detox Coach 📵

    • Metaverse Architect 🌐

Discuss what skills these roles might require and why they’re important.

  3. Create a Career (30 min):
Each student invents their own techie job of the future. They fill out the Future Tech Job Fair worksheet and create either a poster or digital slide to “advertise” their job at the fair.

  4. Gallery Walk or Mini-Presentations (15–20 min):
Host a “Future Tech Job Fair” around the room or in breakout groups. Students present their new roles and answer questions from “visitors.”

💡 Bonus Quirky Angle:

Invite students to come dressed as their techie persona for extra flair—or record “job fair interviews” on Flip! 🎤🕶️

🖥️ Quirky in the Workplace

A.K.A. “Today we honor the wizards behind the Wi-Fi...by confusing them slightly.”

Techies Day is meant to appreciate the IT heroes and digital sorcerers who keep our office machines from spontaneously combusting. But instead of a generic thank-you email and a doughnut, let’s get weird—and delightfully byte-sized—with it.

🖱️ “Bug or Feature?” Mystery Support Tickets

Have everyone in the office submit a fake but believable IT support request—the weirder, the better—and the tech team has to guess:
Is this a real ticket we’ve received before, or total nonsense?

Examples:

  • “My monitor smells like burnt toast when I open Excel.”

  • “The coffee machine is connected to the printer again.”

  • “Every time I type ‘deadline,’ my keyboard autocorrects to ‘delight.’”

You can do it Jeopardy-style, with someone reading them aloud and techies buzzing in with “Bug!” or “Feature!”
Bonus points if your tech team brings their own absurd tickets from the archives.

Winner gets:
A trophy made out of broken USB cables, a vintage mouse pad, and the profound respect of confused colleagues everywhere.

Tagline for the day:
“Techies Day: Because without them, we'd all still be trying to fax someone a screenshot.”

🎬 Movie: Ex Machina (2014)

This is a smart, thought-provoking film about artificial intelligence, robotics, and the ethics of technology. It centers on a programmer invited to administer a Turing test to a humanoid robot, exploring the line between human and machine.

Why it fits: It delves deep into questions of consciousness, tech creation, and the power dynamics between creator and creation — perfect for reflecting on what “techie” work can lead to.

📺 TV Episode: “eps1.1_ones-and-zer0es.mpeg” from Mr. Robot

This is Episode 2 of Mr. Robot (Season 1). In it, Elliot, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker, gets drawn deeper into the world of hacking and conspiracies.

Why it fits: Mr. Robot as a series is steeped in the mindset of hackers, security, vulnerability, and the power (and danger) of tech. This particular episode explores identity, code, and moral choices around using tech.

🚀 Final Byte

Whether they’re silently saving the day from behind two monitors or loudly explaining why your RAM is crying, techies deserve all the love today. So plug in, power up, and don’t forget to restart your appreciation levels. 💡💘
