🧠 A Little Backstory from a Galaxy Not That Far Away

Star Wars Day isn’t an official holiday (yet—looking at you, Galactic Senate), but it started as a grassroots fan celebration. The pun “May the Fourth be with you” was first used publicly in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister. Her party placed a congratulatory ad in the London Evening News that read:

“May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Yeah, not the origin story you expected, huh?

Since then, fans around the world have embraced May 4 as a day to celebrate George Lucas’s epic space opera, with movie marathons, cosplay, trivia battles, and general nerdy revelry. Disney, which now owns the franchise (insert ominous music here), has leaned in hard—because of course they have.

🌠 Elementary Classroom Idea (Grades K–5)

🌌 Secondary Classroom Idea (Grades 6–12)

  • The Science of Lightsabers (Physics/Chemistry) ⚗️🔬
Discuss energy sources and laser/plasma tech. Students research whether lightsabers could exist with our current understanding of science.

🌌 May 4 – Star Wars Day: Quirky in the Workplace Edition
A.K.A. “May the Fourth Be With Your Inbox.”

Today is the one day of the year when quoting Yoda in a performance review is marginally acceptable and staplers are allowed to make lightsaber noises. Whether you're a full-blown Jedi Knight of HR compliance or just here for the office puns, Star Wars Day at work is your time to shine like a freshly polished droid.

  • "This is the Way" Signage Takeover
Replace all motivational posters and directional signs in the office with dramatic, Star Wars-ified versions.
    Examples:
📌 “Do or do not. There is no ‘circle back.’”
📌 “The conference room you’re looking for is to the left.”
📌 “Please use the Force... of common sense in the kitchen.”

🎬 Movie that Embodies Star Wars Day:

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Look, A New Hope walked so Empire could casually drop “I am your father” and change cinematic history.

  • Peak Vader.

  • Peak Leia sass.

  • Peak Han smirking while low-key panicking.

  • Ice planets, cloud cities, awkward sibling kisses... it’s got everything.

💫 Vibes: Darker, deeper, and arguably the best Star Wars film—fight me, Ewok lovers.

📺 TV Show Episode that Screams Star Wars Day:

How I Met Your Mother – Season 2, Episode 20: “Showdown”
Why? Because it includes Barney’s obsession with The Price Is Right AND Ted’s deeply specific dealbreaker:

“If a woman doesn’t like Star Wars, it’s over.”

Ted even makes his date watch Star Wars, then worries she’s faking enjoyment (spoiler: she is).
It’s oddly relatable, deeply nerdy, and perfect for anyone who’s ever whispered “I love you” and hoped the reply was “I know.”

🛸 Bonus: The entire gang acknowledges Star Wars as a personality trait. And isn’t that what May 4 is all about?

So whether you're planning to binge the entire saga, duel your dog with a glow stick, or just walk around whispering "I am your father" at people, May the Fourth is your excuse to get a little weird and a lot wonderful.

And remember: if someone says "I love you," the only acceptable response today is—

"I know." 😉
