✈️🔧 May 24 — Aviation Maintenance Technician Day 🔧✈️
Celebrating the Heroes Who Keep Us Flying (and Hopefully Tighten Every Bolt Twice)
There are two kinds of people in this world:
The people calmly sipping ginger ale at 35,000 feet.
The people making sure the wings stay attached so #1 can sip ginger ale in peace.
Today is all about category #2.
Happy Aviation Maintenance Technician Day — the holiday dedicated to the highly skilled humans who inspect, repair, troubleshoot, test, maintain, and occasionally stare suspiciously at airplane noises before the rest of us even notice them. Pilots may get the cool sunglasses, but aviation maintenance technicians are the real MVPs of the runway.
So grab your toolbox, your aviator shades, and maybe a tiny bag of pretzels. We’re celebrating the hardworking folks who keep the skies safe and the flights on schedule-ish.

🛩️ The History of Aviation Maintenance Technician Day
Aviation Maintenance Technician Day is celebrated every year on May 24 in honor of Charles Edward Taylor, the brilliant mechanic who built the first aircraft engine used by the Wright brothers in 1903.
The Wright brothers get a lot of the attention. Books, museums, documentaries, airport gift shop mugs but meanwhile Charles Taylor was over there literally building the engine that made the whole thing possible.
Without him, the Wright Flyer probably would’ve just aggressively rolled across a field.
Taylor designed and built the lightweight engine in only six weeks — which is impressive considering most of us need six weeks to assemble IKEA furniture.
Today’s aviation maintenance technicians continue that legacy by making sure airplanes remain safe, reliable, and ready to fly. These professionals work long hours, solve complex problems, and somehow understand manuals that look like robot tax forms.
And for that, we salute them.
✈️ Fun Facts About Aviation Maintenance
1. Airplanes Get Checked CONSTANTLY
Commercial aircraft undergo inspections before and after flights, plus detailed routine maintenance checks ranging from minor inspections to massive overhauls.
Basically, planes get more checkups than toddlers in daycare.
2. Mechanics Need Serious Training
Aviation maintenance technicians often complete specialized FAA-certified programs and licensing exams that cover everything from engines to electronics.
3. A Jumbo Jet Has Millions of Parts
Which means if one tiny thing acts suspicious, somebody has to figure out exactly where it is.
No pressure.
4. Aircraft Tires Don’t Last Long
Some airplane tires only survive a few hundred landings before needing replacement.
Meanwhile my car tires are out here surviving potholes fueled purely by spite.
5. Planes Can’t Just “Pull Over”
Unlike your car making weird noises near a gas station, aircraft maintenance has to prevent problems before takeoff.
6. Aviation Maintenance Is a 24/7 Job
Airports never sleep, and neither do maintenance crews during weather delays.
7. Charles Taylor Also Managed the Wright Brothers’ Shop
So yes — he was basically the original engineering multitasker.
🛠️ Creative Ways to Celebrate Aviation Maintenance Technician Day
1. Thank an AMT
If you know someone in aviation maintenance, send a message thanking them for helping keep travelers safe.
2. Visit an Aviation Museum
Spend the day exploring vintage aircraft and appreciating how far aviation technology has come.
3. Watch Planes Take Off
Find a safe airport observation area and enjoy a surprisingly relaxing afternoon of plane spotting.
Tiny snacks optional but encouraged.
4. Build a Model Airplane
Whether it’s a detailed collector kit or a chaotic glue-stick situation with kids, aviation-themed crafts are always fun.
5. Learn Basic Aircraft Terminology
Impress people at dinner by casually saying things like:
“Ah yes, the fuselage.”
6. Host a Flight-Themed Dinner
More on that below because yes, there will be tiny airline snack energy involved.
7. Wear Aviator Sunglasses
This is not mandatory, but it does increase confidence levels by approximately 73%.
8. Watch an Aviation Documentary
There are fantastic documentaries about aircraft engineering and historic flights that are genuinely fascinating.
9. Make Paper Airplanes
Then immediately become way too competitive about distance and aerodynamics.
10. Support Aviation Students
Donate tools, books, or scholarships to aviation programs if you’re able.
11. Tour a Local Airfield
Many small airports host community events or educational tours.
12. Try Flight Simulator Games
Because safely pretending to land a plane is still stressful somehow.
