🌍 April 22 – Earth Day: Hug a Tree, Kiss a Compost Bin, and Love Your Mother (Nature) 💚
Every April 22, Earth Day rolls around like a hybrid-powered parade float, reminding us that this spinning blue marble is the only home we've got—and maybe, just maybe, we should treat it better than a clearance bin houseplant.
Started in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson (yep, that’s his real name—bless), Earth Day was born out of rising concern over oil spills, smog, and rivers that were literally catching fire (lookin’ at you, Cuyahoga). Inspired by the energy of student anti-war protests, Nelson recruited young activist Denis Hayes to organize a nationwide environmental teach-in. The result? Over 20 million Americans showed up for the planet. And that was before hashtags and reusable straws.
Now Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. Basically, if Earth had a birthday party, this would be it—minus the cake, plus a lot more upcycled art installations and guilt over single-use plastics.
So how do you celebrate this glorious green day without just reposting a moody forest pic on Instagram? Oh, we’ve got ideas. And they’re quirk-approved. 🌱
